Cambodia is a country that truly suffers from landmine's every day. Mines laid by the Khmer Rouge, the Heng Samrin and Hun Sen regimes, the Vietnamese, the KPNLF, and the Sihanoukists litter the countryside. Many of these regimes were extremist communist groups that ruled during the 1970's. The majority of landmine's in Cambodia are near the Cambodia/Thailand border, where members of the Khmer Rouge fled during Cambodia's civil war close to 30 years ago.
FACT: Number of landmine related deaths between 1979 and June 2005: 20,254
PUTTING THINGS INTO PROSPECTIVE: 9/11 caused the death of an estimated 2,752 people. Katrina killed about 1,033. Simple math will show that Cambodia has a Katrina AND a 9/11 every 5.3 years. Yet, their massive death tolls go unnoticed. These deaths take place one at a time, and one death usually isn't enough to make national news.
